Forsaken

“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” A famous question we all recall from Jesus, as he hung upon the cross.

But how many realize it's a quote from Psalm 22?

You see, Jesus wasn't just bemoaning the loss of intimate connection between himself and his Father God, he was also directing we, his followers, to see the prophecies hidden in the lines of Psalm 22!

In verse six, the psalmist claims he was “scorned by others, and despised by the people,” which certainly lines up with the crucifixion.

In verse seven, the writer of Psalm 22 claims that “All who see me mock at me; they make mouths at me, they shake their heads;”

He goes on in verse 8 to say that doubters said, in summary, if he is who he says he is, let God rescue him!

There are many other examples, but perhaps the most revealing is verse 18. “They divide my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots.” Imagine how bizarre this line would be to the ancient Jews before Jesus fulfilled and named it as a prophecy!

Although I have broken Psalm 22 into two songs, I am so moved by the final verse, thirty, which proclaims the hope and purpose of Jesus' life and death! It says, “Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord, and proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn, saying that he has done it.”

Indeed! He has done it! Our Lord has broken the chain of death, and given hope for all people now and always! Our sins are forgiven, and we can live in right relationship with God!

Amen
